What is preventive cardiovascular screening?
A cardiovascular screening uses ultrasound imaging technology to provide a safe, non-invasive and accurate way to detect early warning signs of heart or vascular disease that may be present in those who appear healthy. Screenings provide Peace of Mind or Early Detection.
Why is screening important?
Awareness & early detection before symptoms arise are the most powerful tools to ensure the best quality of life.
Unlike cancer screenings, cardiovascular disease screenings are neither common nor covered for individuals without symptoms. If you want to be proactive about your health, the opportunities to be screened for heart disease, stroke, and aneurysm can be very limited—placing your cardiovascular health at a severe disadvantage.
Cardiovascular disease kills 64% more than cancer.
—American Heart Association’s Heart Disease and Stroke Statistics, 2008 Update
Typically, you can't walk into your doctor's office and ask to be tested for carotid artery disease or an abdominal aortic aneurysm if you're asymptomatic—doctors will usually avoid ordering tests that aren't covered by insurance.
Foothills Heart & Vascular Screenings provides the tools you need to be proactive about your health—at costs significantly less when compared to hospitals or clinics.

Our Screening Services
We provide a variety of preventative imaging services for your heart-health concerns. Extensive exam protocols are implemented to adhere to those of an accredited heart or vascular lab. We can provide the required documentation needed to submit for HSA or FSA reimbursement, but do not accept health insurance at this time.
Our highly trained staff use state-of-the-art ultrasound technology to record valuable information about your heart and blood vessels. A board-certified physician reviews each exam, and a finalized report will be provided by mail within 14 business days. Often minor abnormalities that do not cause symptoms are identified. Our reading Specialist can recommend a follow-up schedule of studies to watch for progression of disease. We recommend always sharing your screening results with your primary care physician.
Our screenings are recommended for anyone over the age of 45 with a family history of heart or vascular disease and/or multiple risk factors such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, history of tobacco use, inactive lifestyle, high stress levels, or obesity.

Blood Pressure (BP)
A blood pressure measurement is included with every screening package at FHVS. High blood pressure, known as Hypertension, is a common condition that affects the body's arteries. Untreated, high blood pressure increases the risk of heart attack, stroke and other serious health conditions.
Electrocardiogram (EKG/ECG)
An "EKG" or "ECG" is a rhythm strip analysis that measures the electrical activity in the heart. It helps to detect the presence of Atrial Fibrillation (A-Fib), a common and often asymptomatic irregular heart rhythm that can lead to stroke.

Echocardiogram
Commonly called an "Echo", it uses high frequency sound waves to produce detailed real-time images of your heart. It measures the size and shape of the heart, records the blood flow through the heart valves, and evaluates the heart's pumping strength.
Carotid Artery Duplex
Uses ultrasound technology to screen for plaque build-up, known as atherosclerosis, in the arteries of the neck. Plaque builds up slowly over time often causing no symptoms until a blockage or narrowing is severe. Carotid Artery Disease is a major risk factor for stroke.

Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm (AAA)
Sound waves create detailed images of the abdominal aorta to look for any enlargement that might require further examination. Measurements are used to determine the size and location of an Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm (AAA), if present. Most AAAs develop without causing any physical symptoms or pain. Approximately two-thirds of all AAAs occur in men.
Ankle-Brachial Index (ABI)
Considered the "gold standard" used to evaluate for decreased circulation to the lower extremities caused by atherosclerosis. The ABI is calculated using the systolic blood pressure in the upper arms and ankles. An abnormal ABI and the presence of symptoms relative to Peripheral Arterial Disease (PAD) may signal a higher risk of heart disease and stroke. Common symptoms include cramping, pain or tiredness in the leg or hip muscles while walking, climbing stairs or exercising.
